ATHLETIC STADIUM GROUNDSKEEPER (3415)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in directing the performance
of skilled groundskeeping and maintenance functions at San Jose Municipal Stadium,
P.A.L. Sports Complex and City Park athletic fields. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Supervises, provides lead direction and participates in the maintenance of the turf and all skinned areas such as runways, pitcher's mound, home plate area, base paths and running tracks at the Municipal Stadium, to conform to the standards necessary for professional baseball.
Sets up, supervises, provides lead direction and participates in the maintenance of the lighted and unlighted playing fields in conformance with standards necessary for various levels of soccer, baseball, softball, football and youth programs.
Supervises, provides lead direction and participates in the maintenance of the grandstand and adjacent parking areas and facilities at the Municipal Stadium and the P.A.L. Sports Complex.
Grades and prepares base paths, applies top dressing, lays sod and seeds athletic infield and outfields.
Performs watering, cultivating, aerating, pruning and planting a variety of turf, trees and shrubs.
Applies fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers.
Operates equipment such as power mowers, power edgers, sod cutters, aerator, turf sweeper, backpack blower, rollers, spray rigs, skip loaders, loam screeners, trucks, equipment and tools.
Trains, supervises, and schedules employees involved in the duties as outlined above.
Performs public contact and liaison work with concessionaires, general managers and representatives, and players of professional, semi-professional and other league teams, the media, the public and others in handling operational problems at exhibitions and events.
Prepares budget recommendations, schedules events, maintains records and prepares reports.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The incumbent reports to a Parks Manager and supervises Groundskeepers involved in maintaining
athletic fields and facilities. This class differs from the higher class of Park Manager in the level of
management responsibility exercised and from the lower class of Groundskeeper in that an incumbent of
the class supervises the Groundskeepers.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment used in the preparation of athletic fields, methods used in planting, cultivating, irrigating and caring for turf, shrubs, plants and trees.
Knowledge of safety procedures in working with hand and power equipment.
Ability to maintain and alter playing fields to conform to high quality standards necessary for the playing of professional baseball and similar events.
Ability to recognize common plant and turf diseases and pests and apply approved methods and materials used in their control and elimination.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Knowledge of the operation and minor upkeep of light trucks, tractors, power and automotive
equipment.
Training And Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school or possession
of a General Educational Development (GED) certificate and three (3) years of experience in the
preparation of athletic fields.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid California drivers license. Possession of a valid State of California Certified Commercial Applicator's license within one
(1) year of appointment.
